The Fighting Club Revived in Asia

Bankers, lawyers and accountants in Hong Kong and Singapore are becoming lean and mean. They are battling the financial meltdown as well as the ill fate that awaits Cambodian children who are penniless and await surgery. Inside the Intercontinental Hong Kong hotel ballroom on March 26, these professional elites in white collars and black ties will not be dancing. For charity and love of the sport, they’ll be fighting at the second White Collar Boxing event in Hong Kong. I got to know about the event as two of my own patients are questioning me when they could start training after their operations in January.

“Is it running? That should be all right.”

“No, it’s boxing. To train for it, I’m supposed to rehearse taking repeated blows on my abds.”

“No kidding!”

Subsequently, I got the explanation that these lean men and women have undergone 12 weeks of intensive training for the event, which aims to raise money for the Children's Surgical Center in Cambodia. The first title fight of the event will be between Budgie "Dynamite" Wright, 45, of Merrill Lynch and Jonathan "The Edge" Gurnsey, 43, from Credit Suisse in the welterweight division. Meanwhile, Swede Ulrica Andersson and American Lissa Howard will be staged as the first female fighters in this Asian event.
