Passion for Fashion

Roger took the stairs to walk down to the street level. He was pissed and taking the stairs allowed him to swear and tap his cigarette hard on the box of the cigarettes on his way down. Chater Road at 1pm was much less hostile than at 9am or 5pm. He could stroll a little and smoke while wives and girl friends of wealthy lawyers walk by with shopping bags in their hands. "That's a superb boob job, fit for the Alexander McQueen," he thought to himself after staring at a young woman in a revealing top. Watching beautiful women walk by calmed him down. He always wanted to be a fashion designer. His father didn't think it was such a hot idea. "They'll think you're gay." He was tempted to tell his father, who's also his supervising barrister, that they were right thinking that. "The average life expectancy of a Hong Kong barrister is sixty. That's just another three years to put up with. Fashion design can wait." He cheered himself up at the thought of wearing a sleek black Ferragamo suit to attend his father's funeral, yet making a subtle final winning statement with a pair of pink and green Hugo Boss socks.

This is terrific. I like the "voice" and the pacing, and the end is great. I hope you'll keep writing - maybe more with this character.

Hi ltfawkes,

thanks for commenting. The piece was a short exercise for a writing course. I kind of like the character and might let him do more.
